LECTURA DE OTOÑO: THE SECRET HISTORY de Donna Tartt (1992)

Tema: Dark Academia.

Tenía muchas ganas de leer este libro.

Me atraía la figura de Donna Tartt, eso de escribir un libro cada 10 años, los temas relacionados con la Academia y la cultura, cierto elitismo. Es el libro que se le relaciona con ese concepto estético de Dark Academia, una obra clave, que me parece muy interesante explorar y que me gusta mucho: la música clásica, la literatura clásica, la estética vintage en ropa y en decoración. 

Quería que me gustara este libro, I wished I would have liked this book...Pero...me he aburrido leyendo The Secret History...: oh my god!! so tedious, long, and without suspense, never-ending dialogues between the main characters...this story could be solved in a few pages, better for the book.

Tenía planeado leer The Goldfinch pero de momento con este he tenido bastante. Creo que es incluso más largo. Me ha dejado sin ganas de más. 

Parece ser que hay una película de 1992, el año que se publicó el libro, con un joven Hugh Grant, cuya fotografía me gusta, pero que no he visto, habrá que buscarla:

LECTURA DE OTOÑO: THE GRAVEYARD BOOK de Neil Gaiman (Bloomsbury, 2018)

Libro juvenil. 

Idioma de lectura: inglés.

Temática neogótica.

Cuenta la historia de un niño Nobody Owens, que queda solo en el mundo debido a que asesinan a sus padres, y es criado en un cementerio por los fantasmas que habitan en él. 

Resaltar: 

-Transmite valores afines a que hay que vivir la vida y disfrutarla. 

-El crecimiento de un niño hasta que tiene 16 años, su evolución. 

-El momento en el que hay que dejar a los hijos volar solos, vivir su propia vida, tomar riesgos, equivocarse, integrarse en la vida adulta. 

-El romanticismo de los viejos cementerios británicos. 

-Integrar la muerte en la vida, vivir y luego morir, todo natural. 

-El principio: 

"The was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife. The knife hand a handle of polished black bone, and a blade fine and sharper than any razor."

Interesante conferencia a jóvenes artistas recién licenciados en la universidad, un mensaje: haz buen arte. 

-Impresiones: me parece una persona interesante, un escritor de literatura juvenil sobre todo a seguirle la pista, éxito de ventas. 

LECTURA DE OTOÑO: Frankenstein de Mary Shelley (1831, Penguin Classics)

Lectura en idioma original: inglés.

Versión de 1831, revisada por Mary Shelley, la primera edición se publicó en 1818 y la revisó además Percy Shelley. 

Este volumen además tiene al final los otros relatos que escribió el grupo de amigos durante "El verano sin verano" en la mansión de Lord Byron a orillas del lago Leman: "A fragment" de Lord Byron y "The Vampyre: a Tale" de John William Polidori.

Temas que me han llamado la atención y que me interesa subrayar: 

• El encuentro de un padre y un hijo rechazado por su padre. Un hijo por otra parte que ha atacado a su padre y se ha vengado matando a sus seres querido:
• The creature: "Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, thy creature, to whom thou art bound by ties only dissoluble by the annihilation of one of us. You purpose to kill me"
• La desesperación de un hombre que lo ha perdido todo, el Dr. Frankenstein, y que se culpa por ello:
• Dr. Frankenstein: "Nothing is more painful to the human mind than, after the feelings have been worked up by a quick succession of events, the dead calmness of inaction and certainty which follows and deprives the soul both of hope and fear. 
• El monstruo como filósofo:
• Sus lecturas primeras con las que se autoeduca: "Paradise Lost", "Plutarch's Lives", "Sorrows of Werner".
• La naturaleza & el monstruo:
• The monster: "Autumn passed thus. I saw, with surprise and grief, the leaves decay and fall, and nature again assume the b arena and bleak appearance it had worn when I first beheld the woods and the lovely moon. "
• The monster: "On day, when the sun shone on the red leaves..."
• The monster: "The pleasant sunshine, and the pure air of day, restored me to some degreee of tranquillity.."
• El rechazo de la sociedad al diferente, el monstruo es rechazado por ello por varias personas con las que se encuentra: la familia que vive en la casa del bosque, el hermano de Victor Frankenstein, Justine, y también por si mismo cuando se ve diferente a los demás al reflejarse en el lago:
• The monster: "I cherished hope, it is true; but it vanished when I beheld my person reflected in water, or my shadow in the moonshine, even as that frail image and that inconstant shade".
• El monstruo necesita una mujer para sentirse acompañado y dejar de estar solo, necesita otra monstrua como él:
• The monster to his father: "You must create a female for me, with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being. This you alone can do; and I demand it of you as a right which you must not refuse to concede". 
• El monstruo es vegetariano:
• The monster: "My food is not that of man; I do not destroy the lamb and the kid to glut my appetite; acorns and berries afford me sufficient nourishment"
• El amor entre Victor Frankenstein y Elisabeth, criados como hermanos, ella es adoptada por sus padres, pero que siempre pensaron en ella en la familia como la mujer de Victor, hace plantearse a la propia Elisabeth en si su amor es el de hombre y una mujer o el amor de hermanos, un tema con tintes incentuosos: 
• Carta de Elisabeth a Victor antes de casarse:  " That our union had been the favorite plan of your parents ever since our infancy...We were affectionate playfellows during childhood, and I believe, dear and valued friends to one another as we grew older. But as brother and sister often entertain a lively affection towards each other without desiring a more intimate union, may not such also be our case?"
• El padre que muere buscando a su hijo para matarlo por todos los confines de la tierra: lo recoge un barco en el mar, y el capitán Walton escucha su historia hasta que muere.
• La capacidad que tiene el monstruo para vengarse de su padre, asesinando y poniendo pistas falsas para que culpen a inocentes: Justine, a la que culpan e asesinar al hermano de Victor y al propio Victor al que culpan de asesinar a su mejor amigo Clerval.
• El desenlace final en el que el monstruo se encuentra también con el capitán Walter, al que le cuenta parte de su historia y al que le dice que se va para morir:
• The monster: " I the miserable and the abandoned, am an abortion, to be spurned at, and kicked, and trampled on. Even now my blood boils at the recollection of this injustice"
